had an interview in 4 days and practicing alone in my room felt completely pointless
got a callback for a backend role on monday, interview scheduled for friday. i tried the whole 'rehearse answers out loud' thing and it just felt fake — like i was performing for nobody.
the problem wasn't that i didn't know what to say. i had decent answers written down. but the second i tried saying them out loud by myself, i'd either rush through it or forget my own point halfway. there's no pressure when you're just talking to a wall.
i needed something that actually felt like an interview — where i had to answer on the spot, couldn't pause and rewrite, couldn't see the next question coming. found this tool called nxtinterview that runs mock sessions based on your resume and the job description. you paste both in, it generates questions, and you respond live (audio or text). it scores your answers and points out where you were vague or missed the question.
what actually helped: it asked follow-ups i didn't prep for. in one mock it asked about a project on my resume, then immediately hit me with 'what would you do differently now?' — hadn't thought about that. by thursday i'd done like 6 sessions and my answers were way tighter. the real interview friday went better than any i've done before because i wasn't scrambling to structure thoughts in real time.
still didn't get the offer (they went with someone internal) but the feedback was positive and i actually felt confident the whole time, which hasn't happened in years.
if you're in that same spot where solo prep feels useless, might be worth trying. it's at nxtinterview.com — i'm not affiliated with it, just found it genuinely helpful when i needed something that simulated actual pressure.
