i could recite the STAR method in my sleep but still went completely blank in every behavioral round
knew the STAR method cold. studied it, wrote out examples, even had a friend quiz me once. then i'd sit down in the actual interview and my brain would just… stop.
happened three times in a row. prepped for hours, had solid stories ready, could walk through situation-task-action-result no problem when i was alone. but the second someone asked "tell me about a time you handled conflict" my mind went completely empty. not nervous exactly, just… frozen.
the problem wasn't that i didn't know what to say. it was that i'd never actually said it out loud under any kind of time pressure. reading about behavioral questions and actually answering them in real-time are completely different skills.
i found this tool called nxtinterview that lets you do timed mock interviews with an AI that asks follow-up questions. sounds gimmicky but honestly it was the first time i practiced answering on the spot instead of just reviewing notes. did maybe 6-7 sessions over two weeks before my next round.
didn't magically become perfect, but i stopped blanking. had an interview last week and actually finished my answers instead of trailing off halfway through. recruiter said i came across way more confident than their notes from the phone screen.
still wild to me that the fix wasn't more prep — it was just practicing the actual act of answering under pressure.
if you keep freezing up even though you "know" your stories, might be worth trying some timed practice. helped me way more than another round of reading articles about STAR.
