had an interview in 4 days and practicing alone in my room felt completely pointless

i got a callback for a backend role on tuesday and the interview was friday. i knew i should practice but talking to myself out loud just made me feel like an idiot.

the problem wasn't that i didn't know my stuff — i've been coding for 3 years. the problem was i'd freeze when someone asked me to explain something on the spot. i'd rehearse answers in my head but the second i tried saying them out loud alone, i'd either trail off or sound way too scripted.

i tried recording myself on my phone. deleted it after 30 seconds because i hated hearing my own voice stumble. then i googled something like 'mock interview that talks back' and found nxtinterview. it's basically an ai interviewer that asks you real questions based on your resume and the job description. you talk, it responds, asks follow-ups if you're vague.

what actually helped: it caught me when i was being too general. i said something like 'i improved performance' and it immediately asked 'by how much and what was the bottleneck?' — the exact kind of thing a real interviewer would push on. i had to get specific. by day 3 i wasn't fumbling nearly as much.

the real interview friday went way smoother than i expected. i didn't get every question right but i didn't blank either. got a second round scheduled for next week.

full disclosure: i'm just someone who used this, not affiliated with them at all. just sharing because practicing alone wasn't working and this was the first thing that actually felt like prep.

if you're in the same spot — interview coming up, no one to practice with — might be worth trying. helped me not sound like a mess when it mattered.
